Tungsten carbide-cobalt alloy (cemented carbide) sheets are high-performance materials manufactured via powder metallurgy, using tungsten carbide (WC) as the hard phase and cobalt (Co) as the binder. Their unique microstructure endows them with extreme hardness, wear resistance, and high-temperature resistance, making them indispensable key materials in modern industries such as manufacturing, chemical engineering, and healthcare.
I. Core Composition & Production Process
The primary components of cemented carbide sheets are tungsten carbide (80%-97% content) and cobalt (3%-20% content), with precise proportioning to optimize performance. The production process includes:
1. Powder Preparation: Ultra-fine WC and Co powders are produced via ball milling to ensure particle uniformity.
2. Mixing & Compacting: Raw materials are wet-milled, dried, granulated, and then compacted under high pressure, achieving a green compact density of over 85% of the theoretical value.

3. Sintering & Treatment: Sintering at 1400-1500°C in a vacuum or reducing atmosphere forms a dense structure where WC particles bond with the Co matrix. High-end products may use hot isostatic pressing (HIP) to eliminate internal defects and further improve density and strength.
4. Precision Machining: Dimensions are controlled via wire electrical discharge machining (EDM) and grinding, achieving a tolerance of ±0.05mm.
II. Key Properties
1. Ultra-High Hardness & Wear Resistance: Hardness reaches HRA 89-93 (equivalent to HRC 69-81), with wear resistance over 10 times that of high-speed steel, capable of enduring high-load cutting and friction for extended periods.
2. High Strength & Impact Resistance: Flexural strength ranges from 2000-3500 MPa. Higher cobalt content improves toughness, making it suitable for complex stress environments.
3. High-Temperature & Chemical Stability: Maintains stable hardness at 500°C, resists acid/alkali corrosion, and shows excellent oxidation resistance, ideal for chemical equipment and high-temperature molds.
4. Low Thermal Expansion & High Thermal Conductivity: Thermal expansion coefficient is only 1/3 that of steel, with thermal conductivity close to metals, suitable for precision instruments and heat dissipation components.
III. Application Fields
1. Mold Manufacturing:
- Blanking Dies: For high-speed blanking of thin sheets (copper, aluminum, stainless steel), with a service life dozens of times longer than traditional die steel.
- Progressive Dies: For precision stamping of electronic components (e.g., LED lead frames, silicon steel sheets), ensuring dimensional accuracy and mass production efficiency.
2. Cutting Tools & Wear-Resistant Components:
- Cutting Tools: Woodworking tools, plastic granulator blades, etc., maintaining sharpness under harsh conditions and reducing replacement frequency.
- Wear-Resistant Liners: Used in mining machinery and petroleum equipment, with significantly better abrasion resistance than cast iron.
3. Chemical & Medical Fields:
- Corrosion-Resistant Parts: Chemical pipelines, valves, etc., resisting strong acid/alkali erosion.
- Radiation-Shielding Materials: Shielding panels for medical equipment, effectively blocking X-rays and γ-rays.
